What Incoming Third Graders Should Know

 

Tips for Incoming Third Graders

Third Graders Should...

  • Read well enough to comprehend age-appropriate content-area texts.
  • Be able to work independently
    Possess the social skills and maturity required to work in a cooperative learning group.
  • Be able to sustain a 25-30 minute teacher-directed lesson.
  • Have good number sense and be ready to learn the multiplication table with ease.
  • Possess the physical stamina and maturity to sustain the "third-grade day."
  • Be able to transfer information from textbooks/chalkboard to paper/pencil.
  • Be able to process and absorb third-grade curriculum and content.
  • Begin to write in cursive without mixing manuscript.
  • Begin to tell time to the minute (no digital watches).
  • Make transition from temporary to dictionary spelling.
  • AND
  • Possess the emotional maturity to handle the "overwhelming workload" and high expectations required of today's third graders.
  • Contrary to what researchers say, children DO NOT magically catch up grade three!
